In vacuum cleaner history, the idea of the vacuum cleaner was the brainchild of American inventor Ives McGaffey. A vacuum cleaner is basically an air pump turned backward.

In 1901, Hubert Cecil Booth in England, the owner of the Vacuum Cleaning company, was the first to build an aspirator powered by an electric motor. Hubert Cecil Booth of the Vacuum Cleaning Company 's introduction of the first electric vacuum cleaner was a breakthrough, but his vacuum cleaner was also bulky in size and unwieldy to use.

The birth of a Hoover - William H. Hoover

In 1907, American  James Murray Spangler constructed a light, conveniently operated electric vacuum cleaning machine. He sold his invention to an harness maker named William H. Hoover (1849 - 1932), the Hoover model O. Today Hoover is still one of the leading makers of vacuum cleaners in the world.
