History of the zipper
In the history of the
zipper, the zipper patent was filed in 1893 by an
American inventor named Whitcomb L. Judson. The earliest zipper
or zip fastener in the history of the zipper was used in
the apparel industry by 1905. However, these zippers were not
considered practical.
Who invented the zipper
The idea of a fastening system for flexible
materials based on two opposed rows of tiny, interlocking teeth
first occurred to the American investor Whitcomb L. Judson in
1890. The American investor Whitcomb L. Judson perfected and
patented the zipper pattern in 1893.
Although zippers had been used from 1905 in
the apparel industry, they were not practical. The zipper
became more practical after an improved version of the
zippers was developed by Gideon Sundback, a Swedish engineer
working in the United States.
By the 1920s, zippers were in widespread use
in clothing, luggage, and many other applications, and have
continued to be an essential convenience ever since.
