History of the telephone
Telephone patent in the history of the
telephone
A practical telephone was actually invented
independently by two men working in the United States, Elisha
Gray (1835-1910) and Scottish born Alexander Graham Bell
(1847-1922). Incredibly, both men filed for a patent on
their designs at the New York patent office on February 14,
1876 with Alexander Graham Bell beating Elisha Gray by just two
hours.
Alexander Graham Bell and Elisha Gray in
the history of the telephone
Although Elisha Gray had built the first
steel diaphragm or electromagnet receiver in 1874, he was not
able to master the design of a workable transmitter until after
Alexander Graham Bell had. Alexander Graham Bell had worked
tirelessly, experimenting with various types of mechanisms,
while Elisha Gray had become discouraged.
The first telephone call in the history of
the telephone
According to the famous story, the first
fully intelligible telephone call occurred on March 6, 1876.
The first telephone call in the history of the telephone was
made when Alexander Graham Bell called his assistant who was in
another room. "Come here, Watson. I want you" was the first
thing Alexander Graham Bell said on the first telephone call in
the history of the telephone.
Watson, Alexander Graham Bell 's assistant,
heard the request through a receiver connected to the
transmitter that Alexander Graham Bell designed. After that
first telephone call in the history of the telephone was the
birth of the history of the founding of the Bell
Telephone Company. The Bell Telephone Company later became
AT&T. AT&T history began with Alexander Graham Bell 's
Bell Telephone Company. AT&T then grew to be one of hte
largest telephone companies in the world.
