History of Glass
The history of glass began according to a popular legend which originated with the Roman writer Pliny the Elder. Although the oldest piece of glass is believed to have been made in Egypt, it was the Phoenicians who were well known in the history of glass.

How was glass invented?
The invention of Glass and the history of glass happened when blocks of natron or hydrated sodium carbonate were used to support a cooking pot over a fire built on the sand. The heat from the fire was hot enough to melt the two ingredients and they flowed together to form glass.
The oldest piece of glass
The oldest piece of glass known to exist dates from the time of the Egyptian Pharaoh Amenophis I, who reigned from 1557 BC to 1530 BC. The oldest piece of glass in the history of glass is believed to have been made in Egypt or Mesopotamia using the same ingredients present in Pliny the Elder 's legend. Whether or not they invented glass, by about 1200 BC the Phoenicians had become well known throughout the Mediterranean region for the high quality glassware they manufactured for export.
