First Light Bulb
First Light Bulb history is noted. The
discovery of the light bulbs has a transversing history right
from the early 1800's. Before that basically candles, gas lamps
and oil lanterns were used as a source of light. In the year
1809, Humphrey Davy, an English scientist began his journey for
discovering the incandescent source of light. A high power
battery was used by him for inducing the current among the 2
strips of charcoal. The current flowing through these strips
helped in producing the first arc lamp.
Then in the year 1820, Warren De la Rue made
another attempt for the production of the incandescent light
bulb. An electric was passed through a platinum coil in a void
tube. The higher melting point of the platinum allowed the
operation to take place at high temperatures. Although this was
an effective design, the high cost of platinum did not make it
workable for commercial use.
Then in 1860, Sir Joseph Wilson Swan, an
English physicist invented an electric light that was
long-lasting as well as practical. He invented that the
filament of the carbon paper did a good job but they burn up
very fast. In 1878, he gave a demo of his newly invented
electric lamp in England.
In 1877, Charles Brush created carbon arcs
for lighting the public square in USA. Thomas Edison
experimented with a number of filaments for finding out the
right material that will last for a long time as well as glow
sufficiently. He invented that a filament of carbon glowed well
in a oxygen free bulb in the year 1879. But the bulb did not
burn for more than about 40 hours. He gradually produced a bulb
that glowed for 1500 hours.
This bulb was later improved by Lewis Howard
Latimer. He used a carbon filament in the bulb. In 1882, he
patented and formulated a method of making carbon filaments.
Then later on, Willis R. Whitney in the year 1903 discovered a
treatment for this filament. This treatment stopped the
darkening of the bulb from inside when it glows. And at last,
William. D. Coolidge finally discovered the tungsten filament
that lasted for a very long time as compared to all the
filaments previously used for manufacturing the light bulb. And
this was the first light bulb that revolutionalized the whole
world and is in use even today.
This is how years after years; the first
light bulb was finally invented and brought into existence
through progression after successive years by different
scientists. Can you just imagine what your life would have been
before the invention of the first light bulb. Now it is
so easy and convenient just to flip on the switch and you get
on the lights.
You should know that the first light bulbs
that were invented before lasted for about only 150 hours and
ten years after that, Thomas Edison discovered a bulb that
lasted for about 1200 hours. Today, an average light bulb lasts
for a maximum of about 1500 hours.
